Bowens-Bergeron, the luxe label behind those covetable, carved wooden handbags, teams up with Mercedes-Benz and Naeem Kahn for New York’s runways this February.
Consider it a classic bags-to-riches story. Atlanta-based designers Tamara Bowens and Ray Bergeron beat out several better-known fashion brands when they were recently tapped to show their handcrafted wood clutches at this year’s New York Fashion Week (Feb. 9-16). In partnership with Mercedes-Benz, who sponsor the fashion shows at Lincoln Center, the designing duo will create a series of custom clutches inspired by the luxe wood grain inside the limited edition Mercedes-Benz Designo--models that allow for custom woods, leathers and trims. It’s a bit like Cinderella going from broom to the ball, although Bowens-Bergeron had already captured the attention of high-end vendors, including Saks Fifth Avenue, Neiman Marcus, Vogue .com and the travel site Indagare.com founded by a former Town & Country editor.
Embellished evening gowns by NYC fashion designer Naeem Kahn will also be featured as part of this permanent fashion installation at Lincoln Center. Other sponsors include IMG and the addictive fashion site Polyvore. It helps that Bowens holds an MBA from Harvard University and that Bergeron is a master wood carver and furniture artisan. Both are impeccably stylish, smart and visionary just like their custom, collectible bags. These shapely clutches are much like portable sculpture. They are sleek and tactile, with their smooth finishes and aerodynamic curves, and attractive to the eye with their various exotic wood grains and veneers. No two bags are alike given the unique quality of woods’ grain patterns, knots and colors. Each is signed and part of a limited edition collection of 10-25. The luxe factor does not end on the outside. The interiors of the bags are just as posh with lush suede linings—are favorite is in royal purple. Even the discreet script logo is a thing of beauty. The bags are made from veneers and solid woods sourced around the world (macassar, ash, zebrawood, wenge, sycamore, purpleheart, etc.) and derived from managed forests and recycled woods whenever possible. From reality to runway, Bowens and Bergeron have it in the bag.
