Enough Champagne to Sink a Ship..for St. Regis’ Birthday Soiree

A celebration of Titanic proportions is planned for St. Regis Atlanta’s 3rd Anniversary April 10… And YOU are invited!

By Nancy Staab

St Regis Atlanta is throwing a posh 3-year anniversary bash, that happens to coincide with the centennial of the sinking of The Titanic on which St Regis founder John Jacob Astor IV was a passenger, and YOU are invited! There will be enough champagne to, well, sink a ship, a specialty cocktail, a Gilded Age special menu at Paces 88 —plus other festivities worthy of the Astors.

It might be an odd thing to celebrate the sinking of a ship, but when that ship is the legendary Titanic, your founder met his fate aboard it, and the Centennial of the event coincides with your hotel’s own birthday, well, then you have yourself an original theme for a Gilded Age celebration! The St Regis brand is nothing if not posh-- from its signature white-glove butler service and Astor origins to its current day epitome of refined luxe--so what better emblem of the good life than the gorgeous Titanic ship in its day? It seems like just the other day that St. Regis hung out its gilded shingle in Atlanta but it’s already a luxury institution in town. Now the hotel is thanking its Atlanta patrons with a birthday party for the ages.

100 Years, 100 Bottles Birthday Celebration

James Cameron is rolling out a new 3D version of his famous flick in honor of the Titanic’s Centennial and Guernsey’s Auctioneers of New York will auction off more than 5,000 Titanic artifacts on April 1. But the real party will be April 10 at St Regis Atlanta, where the in-house sommelier Harry Constantinescu will saber 100 bottles of Heisdick champagne, the same bubbly served aboard the fated ship, in the Astor Ballroom beginning at 6PM. And the Atlanta public is invited for free, to all the fanfare. Don some party duds and head over to the Buckhead property for birthday champagne and a menu of specialty hors d’oeuvres served during the Titanic’s last dinner of 1912, including smoked oysters with champagne and caviar sabayon; pate de foie gras en croute; braised beef cheef roulade with potato croquette and béarnaise sauce; petit fors and profiteroles. Witnessing the dramatic technique of sabering 100 champagne bottles via a sword, a practice that dates back to the Napolean era, is alone worth the invitation!

Centennial Cocktail, Vintage Titanic Dinner Menu and Legacy Tea for the Month of April

But the celebration does not end April 10. Rather, the St Regis Atlanta will evoke turn-of-the-century, Titanic elegance all month with a special cocktail created for the occasion. “The Centennial” is a posh swill composed of 1912 Madeira Verdelho Reserva, Domaine de Canton ginger liquor, Krug Rosé Champagne, and Breckenridge Bourbon to honor Colonel John Jacob Astor IV, who fought in the Spanish-American War. It’s garnished with an edible orchid-- the favorite flower of John’s mother Caroline Astor. The $100 cocktail comes with a commemorative St. Regis champagne coupe.

Then head to Paces 88 for a special gourmet menu inspired by the last repast aboard the RMS Titanic.  The menu has not been released yet but think classics like Lobster Thermidor with duchess potatoes, lamb with mint sauce and Oysters a la Russe—each historically documented dishes from the Titantic’s last voyage. The vintage dishes will be offered a la carte along with the regular Paces 88 menu. Call 404.563.7910 for reservations.

Or, take in a lady-like Legacy Afternoon Tea, inspired by the Astor family, in the newly redecorated Astor Court during the entire month of April. Call 404.563.7910 for reservations.

Empire Suite Hotel Package

And let’s face it: after all that champagne sabering and drinking, oyster consumption, cocktails, festivities, decadent dinner, and partying like it’s 1912, what better way to cap off the night than to enjoy the indulgence of a St Regis hotel suite? For the month of April, The St. Regis Atlanta will offer an exclusive Empire Suite room package for $3,300—the same price of the deluxe parlor suite aboard the Titanic. The package includes a bottle of Heidsieck Blue Label Champagne, breakfast for two at Astor Court, and complimentary valet parking. Seven day advance reservation required.
