James Bond on the Auction Block? We’re Shaken AND Stirred!
Snag your bit of 007 film history on the eve of the new Bond flick, “Skyfall”
By Nancy Staab
On the 50th anniversary of the James Bond film franchise, Christie’s hosted an iconic sale of Bond items at their London auction house, from a 2008 Aston Martin to a pair of swim trunks worn by Daniel Craig. But act fast: the bidding ends Oct. 8. Eleven special lot items, including the Aston Martin and swim trucks were put on the block Oct. 5 in a charity auction to benefit UNICEF with Bond stalwarts Sir Roger Moore and Dame Judy Dench hawking the wares.
The invitation-only Christie’s auction of James Bond film items on Oct. 5, marked the 50th anniversary of the Bond film franchise, beginning with Sean Connnery’s Dr. No in 1962. Few films or film franchises would incite the kind of luxury auction frenzy that a Bond auction raises—and it wasn’t just due to the presence of handsome Sir Roger Moore or the sexy, very short swim trunks on display, worn by Daniel Craig in Casino Royale. Not only did Ian Fleming’s book and their translation into film create a cult following, but the connoisseur spy at the center of these tales also inspired an entire ethos of good taste, champagne, “martini’s shaken not stirred,” exotic locales, ingenious technological gadgets, sartorial splendor, a bevy of beauties, and sleek autos, yachts and planes that would make any P-----y Galore purr. Likewise, the Christie’s auction items are fit for any billionaire playboy with James Bond fantasies. Some of the premium items went on sale for the special charity night Oct. 5 to benefit UNICEF, including the score to the new Bond flick Skyfall, out Nov. 9, and signed and sung by Adele.
Here’s a preview of the gorgeous orchestral piece “Skyfall” by Adele, with critics already comparing it to the benchmark Bond song “Goldfinger” by Shirley Bassey : www.youtube.com/watch?v=7HKoqNJtMTQ
Other items already auctioned off: The powder blue swim trunks by La Perla , worn by Craig as he emerged from the sea in Casino Royale, which fetched 44, 450 British pounds; the 2008 Aston Martin two-door coup driven by Craig in Quantum of Solace which sold for 241,250 British pounds; and a titanium Omega Seamaster Professional Planet Ocean watch, worn by Craig in the upcoming Skyfall, for 157,250 British pounds.
But don’t fret there are still 40 Bond lots up for grabs online through Oct. 8 --though we have to warn you that Mr. Q’s X-Ray glasses from The World Is Not Enough and toothpaste tube detonator from License to Kill are NOT on the block! What is still on the block: A limited- edition cabinet of 12 vintage Bollinger champagnes dating back as early as 1957; a replica silver BMW Z8 Roadster driven by Pierce Brosnan in The World is Not Enough; smoke-blue lensed Tom Ford sunglasses and a Tom Ford single-breasted suit of charcoal serge worn by Craig in Quantum of Solace; black enamel coat-of-arm cufflinks by Ford worn by Craig in Skyfall; a first-edition copy of On Her Majesty’s Secret Service signed by Fleming; a Dr. No movie poster from 1962 and Thunderball poster from 1965; and trivia like a collection of Hotel Fontainebleau props bearing the Miami hotels crest ( a ceramic ashtray, gin rummy score card pad, Please Do Not Disturb sign, and stationery) from Goldfinger that is surely worth it’s weight in gold to any Bond fan.
