Karl Lagerfeld Does Macys?!!
Chanel’s top designer turns his hand to a masstige collection for Macy’s and the results are classic (and not-so-classic) Karl
By Nancy Staab
Karl Lagerfeld’s much-anticipated capsule collection for Macy’s Impulse line has been revealed. Though the collection won’t be in select Macy’s stores until August 31, you can check out key pieces from the official look book now (shot by Karl himself and featuring high fashion model Coco Rocha) in our slide show.
What happens when the master behind Chanel goes masstige? Well, the result is a high/low blend of ladylike tweeds and Puritan-prim black dresses with strikingly severe white collars; rare dashes of romance in terms of a floral print blouse in chiffon and one filmy ice-pink dress; and then a slew of edgy rocker looks. Think: leather jackets, pants, shorts and vests; leggings; finger-less gloves; and graphic tees bearing the designer’s own iconic image which, priced at $49, should fly off the racks faster than the phonebook-heavy fall edition of Vogue.
The 45-piece collection is priced at recessionista levels, from $49 to $169 (for a knee-length coat), and is primarily restricted to a black, white, gray, and pale pink palette with a few pops of hot pink. Rumor has it that Giambattista Valli will follow Kaiser Karl as the next guest designer in November and then for holiday 2011, Lagerfeld, Valli and Brit. designer Matthew Williams will again reprise their guest designer roles, creating new exclusive holiday products for Macy’s. In the meantime, we advise getting in line early on August. 31 for the tee shirts of the oh-so-serious-black-and sunglass-clad one. www. Macys.com
