It’s a star-studded month with Steve Martin, Salman Rushdie, Jerry Seinfeld, Wynton Marsalis, DJ Paul van Dyk and more hitting A-town. Culture comes in droves with Atlanta Ballet’s “Dracula,” the opening of the Frida Kahlo exhibit at the High Museum and Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre performing at the Fox. And revelers have much to celebrate with the Super Bowl, Mardi Gras, Cochon 55,  several oyster and beer fests, and of course the romance racket that is Valentine’s Day!

ONGOING EVENTS

"Good People" at Alliance Theatre

The Broadway hit and Tony Award nominee (2011) "Good People" begins its run today at Alliance Theatre. The play chronicles an encounter between to Irish-Amercians from the Southie neighborhood in Boston. Margie Walsh is a struggling mom facing eviction, who approached her high school boyfriend-turned-medical practitioner who has made it out of the neighborhood. The play chronicles a "clash of class and values, American dreams, and 'doing the right thing' in this funny but fierce drama." The play runs through Feb.10. "Bloody, Bloody Andrew Jackson"

“Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson” at Actor’s Express

MODA’s “The South’s Next Wave” Design Exhibit

Part exhibition, part competition; this show pairs top Atlanta interior designers with the top object designers to create, stunning artistic vignettes throughout the museum. Participants represent a who’s who of Atlanta’s design community in the fields of fashion, art, interior design, etc. The event is curated by David Goodrowe and Tim Hobby, co-founders of Aesthetic Identity Design firm Goodrowe | Hobby. Flight of the Butterflies at Fernbank Museum

"Slavery at Jefferson's Monticello: How the Word is Passed Down" Exhibit at Atlanta History Center

Atlanta History Center hosts the groundbreaking traveling exhibition "Slavery at Jefferson’s Monticello: How the Word is Passed Down." The exhibition explores the lives of enslaved families on Jefferson’s well-known plantation, as well as the powerful stories of their descendants, brought to light through documentary study, oral history, and genealogy. The exhibition was organized by the Thomas Jefferson Foundation at Monticello in partnership with the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture and features objects from Monticello’s collection as well as artifacts from archaeological excavations at Jefferson’s Virginia plantation. Author of “The Aviator’s Wife” Speaks at Margaret Mitchell House

Melanie Benjamin, author of the critically-acclaimed bestseller, The Aviator’s Wife, will speak at Margaret Mitchell House tonight at 7PM. Benjamin gave a riveting fictional account of historical figure Anne Spencer Morrow, Charles Lindbergh’s wife, an early feminist writer, an ambassador’s daughter in her most recent novel.  Other novels focused on the real-life inspiration for Alice in Wonderland and the performer Mrs. Tom Thumb.

Pulitzer Prize Novelist Richard Ford Lectures at SCAD-Atlanta

“Dirty Realism” novelist and short story writer Richard Ford will lecture at 6:30PM at SCAD’s Ivy Hall. Ford won the Pulitzer Prize and the PEN/Faulkner award for his 1995 novel Independence Day, chronicling his sportswriter protagonist Frank Bascombe in a semi-autobiographical manner (Ford was also a sportswriter). His latest novel Canada was published in May 2012. Ford’s style has been likened to that of Updike, Faulkner and Hemingway. Internationally acclaimed photographer Martin Frias will debut his new exhibit, “Rock Iconic” exclusively at W Atlanta – Downtown tonight.  Frias’ work will allow you to step into the front row and experience four decades of rock n’ roll.  Rock icons, including Freddie Mercury, Mick Jagger, Robert Plant, Marilyn Manson, Chris Robinson, Iggy Pop and Ozzy Osbourne, are just a few of the notable names in his photographs.  The exhibit at the W is in collaboration with Denise Jackson, owner of Atlanta’s Emerging Art Scene gallery. The exhibit will be free open to the public from March 8-April 11
