Tons of music rolls into town for the first month of the New Year: Ellie Goulding, Keane, Bryan Adams, Willie Nelson, The XX, Augustana and more! MoMA’s “Modern Moments” exhibit at The High Museum

Experience 100 years of radical artistic developments reflected by artworks drawn from the extraordinary collections of MoMA.  The exhibition includes more than 130 works of painting, sculpture, graphic design, film and video and installation art by such luminaries as Matisse, Dali, O’Keeffe, and Koons.  Fast Forward also presents work by three contemporary artists – Sarah Sze, Aaron Curry and Katharina Grosse.  “Ghengis Khan” exhibit at Fernbank Museum of Natural History

The special exhibition Genghis Khan invades Atlanta through January 21, taking visitors on an unforgettable journey into Khan's legendary empire. This major exhibition includes the largest touring collection of 13th-century Mongolian artifacts ever assembled: more than 200 rare, authentic relics from the conqueror's reign offer visitors a glimpse of historic gold jewelry, ceramics, coins, armor, weaponry, silk robes, costumes, religious relics, a "murdered" mummy, and more. Tickets are $17.50 for adults. SCAD Museum of Art, Savannah, presents "Addio del Passato," new works by artist Yinka Shonibare. The exhibition features photographs from Shonibare’s allegorical "Fake Death Pictures" series, sculptures, and the film "Addio Del Passato" (“So Closes My Sad Story”) that collectively explore themes of desire, love, repression and power. These works weave together conceptual impressions of colonialism using a theatrical vocabulary and visual imagery that speak to history through the lens of the present. Through Jan. 27. For info:


Ice Skating at Park Tavern at Piedmont Park

Ice skate through Valentine’s Day, Feb. 14, at the rink at Park Tavern. The outdoor rink is enclosed in a heated tent with state-of-art sound system, and fireside drinks and dining. The rink is open Monday-Friday from 4:30 to midnight and 10:30AM to midnight on Saturday and Sundays (with Adult Skate from 9PM on, every night). Ice skating sessions are $15 per person and include skate rental. Sessions are an hour and a half long with 30min breaks to clean ice. Individual and Family season passes are also available. MODA’s “The South’s Next Wave” Design Exhibit

The South's Next Wave at MODA The South's Next Wave at MODA

Part exhibition, part competition; this show pairs top Atlanta interior designers with the top object designers to create, stunning artistic vignettes throughout the museum. Participants represent a who’s who of Atlanta’s design community in the fields of fashion, art, interior design, etc. The event is curated by David Goodrowe and Tim Hobby, co-founders of Aesthetic Identity Design firm Goodrowe | Hobby. The South’s Next Wave: Design Challenge will run through March 31, 2013. Atlanta Ballet Performs Cinderella at Gwinnett Performing Arts Center
The Atlanta Ballet reprises the fairytale story of Cinderlla and her glass (ballet) slipper in a family-friendly, one-hour performance, January 4-6, atGwinnett Performing Arts Center. Flight of the Butterflies  Opens at Fernbank Museum

The Lawrence Launches a Month of "Living Walls" Events Tonight

Named one of Atlanta's best restaurants of 2012, The Lawrence is kicking off the New Year in style with Living Walls (the Atlanta-based, international street art conference) as the benefactor of its monthly Tuesday Relief program. Dine at The Lawrence on Tuesdays this month and a portion of proceeds will go directly to Living Walls. Tonight, Jan. 8 The Lawrence launches with a Living Walls Sneak Peek Party that includes a $45 prix fixe dinner menu (optional $20 wine pairings) and a preview of what to expect from Living Walls 2013. The fourth annual Collectors Evening is a festive night of live music, cocktails, dinner, and lighthearted competition among the High Museum curators. This event provides a special opportunity to help the Museum build its permanent collection while mingling with the curators and viewing their proposed works of art from folk to contemporary. Through a series of votes, works chosen by Collectors Evening participants become part of the High's permanent collection. From Jan. 11-17 Table Now Supper Series will host a special dinner of unique ingredients from the Campania region of Italy at No. 246 in Decatur. William Styron's Widow Presents His Book of Selected Letters at the Carter Library

Rose Styron, widow of William Stylron, will present her compilation of William's Selected Letters tonight at 7PM at the Carter Library in conjunction with A Cppella Books. William Styron helped found The Paris Review and won a Pulitzer Prize for The Confessions of Nat Turner and National Book Award for Sophie's Choice. He is also known for his very brave and authentic non-fiction book chronicling his battle with depression called Darkness Visible. No less than Philip Roth and former President Bill Clinton have provided blurbs for this book of letters, providing new insights into this important writer.  Admission is free and open to the public.

Free Reading of Pearl Cleage’s “Dear Dr. King” at Alliance Theatre

The Alliance Theatre, in partnership with the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), is pleased to announce a free performance reading of Dear Dr. King, an original script by author Pearl Cleage in collaboration with the Alliance Collision Project. Inspired by the classic film It’s a Wonderful LifeDear Dr. King uses the unique voice of teenagers to explore issues of legacy and the power that each individual life can play in effecting social change.  Also on January 21 is a free Teen Poetry Slam inspired by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and his ability to spark dramatic social change. “Dear Dr. King” will be performed at 1PM and 3PM at Rich Auditorium at Woodruff Arts Center. Atlanta History Center hosts the groundbreaking traveling exhibition "Slavery at Jefferson’s Monticello: How the Word is Passed Down." The exhibition explores the lives of enslaved families on Jefferson’s well-known plantation as well as the powerful stories of their descendants brought to light through documentary study, oral history, and genealogy. The exhibition was organized by the Thomas Jefferson Foundation at Monticello in partnership with the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture and features objects from Monticello’s collection as well as artifacts from archaeological excavations at Jefferson’s Virginia plantation.
