Wednesday-Saturday Cocktail Hour with Live Music at Mandarin Oriental, Atlanta

Luxe hotel newcomer Mandarin Oriental is offering a chic cocktail alternative Wednesdays  through Saturdays in their Cafe & Bar, beginning at 6PM. Sip stylish cocktails, nosh on innovative bites and enjoy classical and contemporary music by rising star pianist (and Atlanta native) Cameron Carey.


Thursday Night Cocktail in the Atlanta Botanical Garden

Every Thursday, May-September, sip cocktails and admire the blooms at the most beautiful cocktail party in the city. Groove to a live DJ, catch a chef demo in the Edible Garden (7-9PM), and watch for surprise cultural performances. Lily Pulitzer (the shop coming to Phipps) is the sponsor for June so look for bars and bartenders clad in floral prints, floral inspired drinks and even Pulitzer jeep parked out front. The garden stays open late on Thursdays from 6-10PM. Admission is $18.95 for adults with one complimentary cocktail at the cash bar.


Friday Night Live Jazz at the High Museum

On Friday nights from 5-10PM the High stays open late for evening admission to the museum and hosts a weekly live performance of jazz, plus open sketching, bites, and a cash bar.


Sculpture in the Garden at The Atlanta Botanical Garden

19 contemporary works of sculpture by 9 artists will be exhibited throughout The Atlanta Botanical Garden through October in collaboration with Marlborough Gallery New York. Some of the noted artists on exhibit include Beverly Pepper, Red Grooms and Michele Oka Doner. The diverse pieces are showcased in stunning and creative ways on the Garden’s manicured property.

Catch the hit musical Jersey Boys, chronicling Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons and the golden age of pop, at The Fox Theatre through June 10.

Modern Atlanta “Design Is Human”

The modern design symposium returns to Atlanta for the fifth year, June 1-10, with a slew of cool design happenings on the agenda. Highlights include a pop-up Negroni bar, Bar Alto, featuring new BAr Alto glassware, June 7-10 at Sound Table's Space2; a self-guided modern homes tour June 9-10, architect studio crawl, and a special showing of Eames furniture at Sound Table June 9 at 9:30PM with models dressed in the latest Marni fashions courtesy of Jeffrey boutique and local artist/photographer Jason Travis snapping the photos, plus film screenings and lectures curated by Robert A. M. Friday Night “Iron Chef” Competition at Peachtree Farmer’s Market

For one night, June 1, the Peachtree Farmer’s Market will be open on a Friday night instead of the traditional Saturday morning, in the parking lot at Cathedral of St. Philip, Buckhead. Stop by for tons of fresh produce and homemade goodies, live bluegrass music and foodtrucks. Stay for the “iron chef” competition at 4PM in which local chefs will have $45 and two hours to shop for local ingredients and prepare market-inspired plates to 100 lucky patrons. The market will be open from 4-8PM. Tickets are $5 per person.


KD Lang Plays Atlanta Botanical Garden

The Atlanta Botanical Garden kicks off its summer outdoor concert series with KD Lang tonight. Tickets available through Ticket Alternative or at Garden Admissions. But we hear this event is already sold out.


Alice in Wonderland at Serenbe Playhouse

Serenbe Playhouse kicks off its summer season with an enchanting adaptation of Alice in Wonderland under the stars through June 28.


Spoleto Fest, Charleston, S.C

Head to Charleston, through June 10 for a vibrant lineup of music, theater, art, dance, etc--from the classical to avant-garde. Summerfest, Virginia-Highland

One of summer’s best fests, this Virginia-Highland event includes an artists market down Virginia Ave., road races, food and drink, and plenty of live music acts, including New Orleans soul singer Marc Broussard at 6:30PM June 2 and 80’s band The Fixx June 3 at 4:30-6PM. Free Community Day at Woodruff Art Center/ The High Museum

In memory of the 50th Anniversary of the Orly air crash that claimed the lives of 100 Atlanta arts patrons, the Woodruff Arts Center will offer free admission to the High Museum of Art and various free activities for the family such as art workshops,  an instrument “petting zoo,” poetry readings (including a poem written by Pearl Cleage for the occasion), music and story telling.


Salsa Fest at Atlantic Station

Grab your favorite water vessel or floating device and take part in the 10th Annual Back to the Chatahoochee River Race & Festival, complete with music and water activities for the entire family.


Cheers for Children

Drink for the kids! Cheers for Children hosts its annual cocktail benefit for young and upcoming professionals at W Hotel Buckhead tonight with live music from Bill F and the Grand Reckless, an open bar, catered dinner and a silent auction. Tickets are $45/person and all proceeds benefit the patients and families of Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. A discounted room rate at The W is also available this night for dedicated revelers ( I mean charity patrons).


Picturing  New York/Picturing the South at the High Museum

The High Museum of Art’s magnificent partnership with MoMA continues with two  compelling photography exhibits “Picturing New York: Photographs from the Museum of Modern Art” and “Picturing the South" through Sept. 9. Artists in the survey include Walker Evans, Harry Callahan, Berenice Abbott and Diane Arbus.


Ray’s on the River Jazz Concert

At 2PM Ray’s on the River will host a live jazz and blues concert with performances by Jon Liebman, Scott Glazer, Joe Alterman and Darren Stanley. Tickets are $35 with proceeds benefitting the Fragile Kids Foundation. Tickets can be purchased via Event Brite.


Brookhaven Beer Fest

Head to Brookhaven from 3-8PM  for a bevy of beers (150 to be exact) and wine, 2 rock bancs, and a DJ as the fest commandeers the road behind the Marta Station from Apple Valley Road to Dresden Drive. Beer providers include: Sweet Water, Samuel Adams, Shiner, Terrapin, Gordon Biersch and many more. Tickets $40 in advance and $50 at the door.


MA Event with Jeffrey Boutique and Eames Furniture at Sound Table

Modern Atlanta presents an unusual fusion of fashion, design and photography at SoundTable’s next-door gallery venue, Space2. Famed local art photographer Jason Travis will be on hand to capture live models in Marni fashions, and be warned, audience participation is highly encouraged.

Red Bull Soapbox Race at Piedmont Park

41 teams from Atlanta and beyond, including The Sci-Fi Janitors and The Naked Cowboy from NashVegas, will compete in this year’s soapbox car race on the streets of Midtown at 10th Street and Piedmont Park. Pits open at 10AM and the first race is at noon. No pets or glass allowed but food trucks will be on site with food and beverages. Event is free and open to the public.


Lost Oasis Gala at Fernbank Natural History Museum

The Roaring 20’s is the inspiration for this year’s 20th anniversary gala, “Years of Roar.” Enjoy speakeasy cocktails, dancing, flappers, culinary delights and a silent auction.



Wynatte Block Party with Cypress Street Pint and Plate

Whynatte is throwing a block party at Cypress Street, beginning at noon, and you are invited. The “patio” will extend all the way to 6th Street, with tasty gilled and smoked treats (wings, bbq, burgers), King of Pops on the premise, and sips from Whynatte and local brewery Jailhouse, plus two live sets by local band faves Young Orchids and Ocha la Rocha. Farmhouse proprietress Marie Nygren has created a tantalizing spring menu featuring wines from Quivira Vineyards and locally sourced lamb from Many Fold Farm, with represntatives on site to discuss the wines and lamb. Menu highlights include farmhouse hushpuppies with country ham and Manyfold Farm cheese; fried green tomatoes with fried soft shell crab with pickled pepper and beurre blanc; Manyfold Farm roasted leg of lamb with Serenbe Farm vegetables; profiteroles with Serenbe honey lemon thyme ice cream and Boe's blueberries. $125/person. Red Stripe Midsummer Music & Food Festival at Candler Park

Enjoy a food truck happy hour from 4-11PM and tons of live music, including G LOve and Special Sauce, Dirty Dozen Brass Band, and Futurebirds on Friday June 15. Then return Saturday June 16, noon to  11PM for yet more food trucks and music at Candler Park. Free entry but $5 wristband required for alcohol purchase. The band is $10 after 5PM.



Arial “Portrait of My Father” by Artist Brad Downey

Attention all ITP residents: Be sure to look skywards today from 10AM to 2PM and you might catch a surprising glimpse of a new art project by local artist Brad Downey, who is taking the sky as his canvas. A plane will fly a trompe-l’oeil banner featuring an enlarged cloud photo that Downey’s father took while piloting an airplane. Is it a cloud or art? Then meet the artist for a Q&A from 2-3PM at Room & Board in Westside.


Skate It or Hang It Skate It or Hang It

The Opening of “Skate It or Hang It” at the Museum of Design Atlanta

In what has to be the rad-est art exhibit of the summer, MODA devotes its walls and even outside piazza space to a celebration of skateboard chic and skateboard culture through Sept. 16. The exhibit will include skateboard graphics from the 1970s to present day; original installations by Atlanta-based artists influenced by skateboard art such as Alex Brewer AKA graf artist Hense, and a 9-foot interactive skateboard sticker wall.

Check out the opening tonight at MoDA and then head over to W Atlanta Midtown for the after party, Sat. June 16, 6PM-3AM. The front driveway of W Atlanta-Midtown will be tranformed into a pop-up skate park with professional, freestyle demos. while a DJ spins tunes. Enjoy the show with cocktails from the Living Room terrace. At 9PM the party moves upstairs to Whiskey Park for more cocktails and dance beats, projected skate documentaries on the wall, and an outdoor terrace featuring skate-centric art. 

On June 21 MODA will host a National Go Skateboarding Day celebration from noon to 5PM at Brook Run Skate Board Park in Dunwoody.



Sidewalk Art Project with SCAD and Sidewalk Radio

In a unique collaboration between AM 1690's Sidewalk Radio program by Gene Kansas and SCAD Atlanta's School of Fine Arts, SCAD art students in printmaking, photography, painting, sculture and foundation studies will create original works of art inspired by Sidewalk Radio's programing on Atlanta art, architecture, design and city planning. Sidewalk Radio will produce a show about the SCAD artists, their works and inpsirations on Monday June 18 and then the top 34 art works will be exhibited in a gallery at Atlanta Preservation Center with an opening Thursday, June 21. The groundbreaking project turns the city into a virtual classroom and the resulting works are sure to be eye-opening by our city's finest emerging artists.


A week of anniversary events at Genki Noodles and Sushi in Virginia Highland

Genki is celebrating its one year anniversary in Va-Hi with a week of events starting with a sushi rolling class tonight at 7PM with Genki's master sushi chef, plus appetizers, sake and beer for $35 per person. On Wed. June 20th enjoy a special sake pairing event from 7-9PM. Five sakes will be paire diwth five specialty items from the Genki menu for $35 per person in advance or $40 day of. AthFest Music & Arts Festival

Take a road trip to Athens for this major street party/music and art fest featuring over 150 bands in over 15 venues, three free outdoor stage, an artist’s market, film screenings and more. Outdoor stage headliners include Atlas Sound, Reptar and Yacht Rock Revue. The fest launches Wed, June 20- Sun. June 24.

Atlanta Ballet Performs at The Atlanta Botanical Garden's "Cocktails in the Garden"

Head to The Atlanta Botanical Garden tonight from 6-10PM for cocktails, blooms and an evening of world premieres from Atlanta Ballet dancers-turned-choreographers. Known as Wabi Sabi, the dance troupe will stage performances throughout the evening in different areas of the garden. Sultry singer Norah Jones plays the fabulous Fox Theatre tonight in support of her latest album.


The Sixth Annual Ice Cream Social at Cathedral of St. Philip

The 6th annual ice cream social, on the grounds of the Peachtree Farmer’s Market, pits top chefs against each other to see who churns out the best frozen treats. Be sure to bring your own spoon for lots of licks. The event benefits the Atlanta chapter of Slow Food International and the Peachtree Road Farmers.


Big Bang Ball at The Goat Farm

Bang! Arts is hosting this creative event to honor the various artists and companies it has worked with. The one-day festival will take the theme of a modern dustbowl carnival and will include carnival games, fortune telling, art curated by Burnaway and tons of live music by the likes of Blair Crimmins and The Hookers, Lera Lynn, Sadie Hawkins, Flight of swallows and more. Artist Hense Lectures at MODA

Atlanta artist Alex Brewer (aka HENSE) will discuss his work as a visual artist over the past two decades. His free-form paintings and public mural installations use a combination of abstract lines, shapes and organic forms. His work is also part of the current Skate It Or Hang it exhibit about skateboard art and culture. Lecture is at 2PM at Museum of Design Atlanta,

Slow Food Hosts a 2-Day Peach Cook-Off with a BBQ After Party at H. Harper Station

Slow Food Atlanta celebrates Georgia's namesake fruit, the peach, with a peachapalooza cook-off at East Lake Farmer's Market  from 10AM to noon and a peach cobbler contest at Grant Park Farmer's Market Sunday July 1 from 11AM to 12:30PM. After Sunday's cobbler cook-off, head to H. Harper Station for the Slowfood after party. $30 gets you a BBQ plate from Whole Hog BBQ and dinrks. 



European 2012 Soccer Finals

No word yet who will be in the Euro 2012 soccer finals today, but pick your pub accordingly. This shopping mall parking lot converts into a skate park today from 3PM until dark with skateboard demos, food truck court, an artist’s alley with works by 12 Atlanta artists, a live tagging demo by graf artist Hense and painting demo by Chris Hamer. Admission is free.


Red, White and Whiskey Blue at W Buckhead

W Buckhead is rolling out all the stops this 4th of july with DJ Chris Rimby, King of Pops, the Happy Belly food truck and specialty cocktails. Start at the Market restaurant from 5:30AM to 1PM for a festive 4th brunch, Dj, bottomless Mimosas and Bloody Marys and prime views of the Peachtree Road Race. Aso Free Performance, Including Stravinsky's TheFirebird

The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra performs the first of two free summer concerts made possible through the generous support of  the Charles Loridans Foundation, Inc.
