Scarecrows in the Garden, Atlanta’s favorite fall tradition, returns for its 10th annual season of spooky, kooky fun. All month long, the Garden will bstuffed with more than 100 scarecrows handcrafted by businesses, individuals, schools and organizations. In addition to the Scarecrows, enjoy a variety of fall crafts and games in the Children's Garden every weekend, 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. Free with Garden admission. And every Thursday in October, adults can enjoy the gardens, seasonal brews, and live music from 5-10PM



“Skate It or Hang It”at the Museum of Design Atlanta

In what has to be the rad-est art exhibit of the summer, MODA devotes its walls and even outside piazza space to a celebration of skateboard chic and skateboard culture through Oct. 27. The exhibit will include skateboard graphics from the 1970s to present day; original installations by Atlanta-based artists influenced by skateboard art such as Alex Brewer AKA graf artist Hense, and a 9-foot interactive skateboard sticker wall.

Little Black Dress, a major exhibit of this chic and classic wardrobe staple, designed by fashion’s top designers from 1920s to the present day, opens today at SCAD Museum of Art in Savannah and run through Dec. 16. Curated by Vogue Contributing Editor and SCAD Trustee Andre Leon Talley, the exhibition focuses on historic and contemporary examples of the fashion icon “the little black dress,” and reveals how it has been endlessly appropriated and translated. Featured garments include a Tom Ford's Fall/Winter 2011 frock, previously worn by Lady Gaga; a selection from Prabal Gurung's Fall 2011 collection, previously worn by Sarah Jessica Parker; and a Stella McCartney worn by Rihanna. Many other iconic pieces will be displayed, including those from Chanel, L'Wren Scott, Givenchy, Cushnie et Ochs, Yves Saint Laurent and more.

Alex Brewer aka HENSE's work at Sandler Hudson Gallery

Street artists and Atlanta native Alex Brewer, aka HENSE, has his first solo show "Spry" at Sandler Hudson Gallery. The works in spray are inspired by Brewer's recent works for public spaces like the Atlanta Beltline. The mixed-media works on paper and wood are energetic and vivid. He also collaborated with well known artist Scott Ingram on two large drawings in the exhibition. Brewer's work has been exhibited world-wide from Tokyo to Barcelona. Also on view: a neon piece entitled "Another Nice One" on the gallery rooftop by Greely Myatt. Exhibit through Oct.





Launch of the month-long Atlanta Celebrates Photography festival

ACP (Atlanta Celebrates Photography) kicks of with a month of over 150 photo-related exhibits and events. Highlights include Southern portraits by French photographer Pierre Gonnord at SCAD Atlanta, A Selection of Artists form the Oxford American’s Visual Arts Issue at Emily Amy Gallery, Portraits by Seydou Keita and August Sander at SCAD Atlanta, a lecture by Atlanta fashion photographer Lix Von Hoene (Oct. 24) and an ACP Lecture Series at the High Museum (Oct. 23) with renowned photographer Alex Prager, known for her cinematic/pulp fiction renderings. Creativity Conversation at Emory with Alice Walker and Pearl Cleage

The latest installment in Emory University's Creativity Conversation series features a talk with novelist Alice Walker and Atlanta playwright Pearl Cleage and is moderated by Valerie Boyd. The conversation is at 4PM at Cannon Chapel. The talk is free and open to the public but seating is limited so plan to arrive early. 



Atlanta Celebrates Photography (ACP) Double Feature:  Art documentaries by Gregory Crewdson and Alec Soth at Plaza Theatre

Plaza Theatre and ACP host a double-feature of documentaries about two of America's best known contemporary photographers: Alex Soth, featured in Somewhere to Disappear and cinematic photographer/installation artist Gregory Crewdson in Gregory Crewdson: Brief Encounters. Jane Fonda’s G-CAPP Empower Party, honoring Ted Turner

Jane Fonda has often called Ted Turner her “favorite ex-husband” and this fall the legendary actress is turning a spotlight on her former mate for a celebrity evening honoring the Georgia media mogul and philanthropist to benefit G-CAPP (Georgia Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention). Fonda calls Turner “the impetus and inspiration for starting G-CAPP. Opening of “Ghengis Khan” exhibit at Fernbank Museum of Natural History

The special exhibition Genghis Khan invades Atlanta from October 5- January 21, taking visitors on an unforgettable journey into Khan's legendary empire. The Fast Forward: Modern Moments 1913 - 2013 Gala at the High Museum

The Fast Forward Gala, in honor of the new MoMA “Modern Moments” exhibit at the High, includes a festive evening of cocktails, dinner and dancing amid some of the world's greatest works of modern art. Taste Of Atlanta Festival

Taste of Atlanta offers a two-day eating frenzy (Sept. 6-7) in Midtown with over 80 participating restaurants and vendors like Noche, Park 75, The Optimist, D.B.A. Barbecue, Iberian Pig, Local Three and High Road Craft Ice Cream, plus chef demos by Ford Fry, Jay Swift, Ron Eyester and more.  VIP tickets include a cocktail, wine and beer experience. Fernbank Museum of Natural History hosts its 20th Anniversary black-tie gala tonight , borrowing its theme from the current Ghengis Kahn exhibit. The Emperor’s Feast will include sunset cocktails, a seated dinner, live auction, dancing and a private viewing of the Genghis Kahn exhibit of rare 13thcentury Mongolian artifacts. Victorian street festival at Historic Oakland Cemetery

Historic Oakland Cemetery hosts its 33rd annual Sunday in the Park festival from noon to 6PM today. Many come dressed in Victorian costume. Explore the historic grounds and monuments including those of Civil War soldiers and enjoy live music, artists, food and spirits throughout the park. A donation of $5 per person is suggested, children under three are free.


Cakes & Ale Sunday Supper in Oakhurst Garden

Opening of “Apples and Oranges” at The Alliance Theatre

The Alliance Theatre is pleased to announce it will produce the world premiere of Apples & Oranges, a new play by Tony® Award, Academy Award, and Pulitzer Prize winning author Alfred Uhry (Driving Miss Daisy; Parade; The Last Night of Ballyhoo).  Apples & Oranges is based on the memoir of the same name by Vanity Fair writer-at-large Marie Brenner. Apples & Oranges is a funny and moving story on the extremes of family love.  Marie and her brother Carl are vastly different and have been somewhat estranged for most of their adult lives.  Carl, an apple farmer in Washington state, and Marie, a New Yorker and world class journalist, have never shared the same views on politics, religion or acceptable social behavior.  However, when Carl unexpectedly comes to her for help, Marie puts her life on hold to support her brother. Jennifer Schwartz Gallery will host a one-night-only exhibit of photographer Michael Schmelling’s Atlanta hip-hop photos. NYC photographer Schmelling spent two years documenting Atlanta’s hip-hop culture (the players, the cars, the fashion and haunts) for his book Atlanta. Culture Shock at The High Museum of Art

Diesel Filling Station Eatery Hosts Walking Dead Season 3 Premiere Party

Popular Va-Hi eatery Diesel Filling Station hosts the season three premiere party of AMC's Walking Dead TV show tonight at 9PM. For the premiere a guard tower from the series will be recreated in Diesel's parking lot, stockpiled with weapons for zombie photo-ops prior to the show. As always, canned food items will be collected for the Atlanta Food Bank and sale proceeds from the official Diesel viewing party shirts and raffle tickets will be donated as well. Costumes encouraged but early arrival recommended as this event always sells out.  Following the premiere, Diesel will host their ever-so-popular weekly viewing parties every Sunday throughout Season 3. The Shepherd Center's largest fundraiser of the year, The Legendary Party, will be held at This Ritz-Carlton Buckhead tonight. The black tie evening of dinner and dancing is inspired this year by "American Splendor" and is chaired by Kay Quigley. Cocktails will be held in the Rose Garden prior to the sit-down dinner.
