Atlanta’s favorite piece of garden glory, lodged right in the heart of Midtown, is swathed in a tapestry of spring colors thanks to our mild winter, the early arrival of spring and an additional 100,000 bulbs planted last fall an now blooming throughout the property in an array of sunburst colors: peaches, yellows, pinks, lavenders, purples, whites and corals.

Atlanta Botanical Garden tripled its number of spring-blooming bulbs to 300,000 this year—including daffodils, hyacinth, crocus and 50,000 tulips --with staggered bloom dates for an explosive color show “Atlanta Blooms” through March and April. Between March and April, 2,000 shocking pink ‘The Cure’ tulips will greet visitors at the Piedmont Avenue entrance to the Garden, a cure for winter blahs indeed, and a prelude to the garden proper.

Peak season for the tulips may well be these last two weeks of March, so scurry over to take in the petals (and some heavy metal) in the form of ornamental garden gates by artist/blacksmith and Atlanta native Andrew T. Crawford. The small and large-scale gates, some with animal, floral and vegetable motifs, are interspersed throughout the garden and flowerbeds. Crawford is a long-time creative partner of the Garden and has fashioned several permanent works for the Garden as well, such as the garden-tools gate in the Cascades Garden and the benches on the Canopy Walk.

Lastly, check out “Orchid Daze,” an exotic wall of hanging orchids on display in the Fuqua Orchid Center  (home to the largest collection of species orchids in the U.S.) through April 15. Factor in lunch at Metrofresh Garden Café for a lovely afternoon or drop by Thursday April 5, from 5-8PM for the first Blooms and Bubbly cocktail hour of the season. Lastly, stroll the garden’s flower-embroidered paths this Easter for a perfect cap to this spring holiday.

Atlanta Botanical Garden is open Tues.-Sunday, at 1345 Piedmont Ave. NE. Artist Andrew Crawford will lead a tour of his garden gates on April 14.  For more information: 404.876.5859 or
