Super Models as musicians in Duran Duran’s latest music video

It’s been a long time since the original, one-name super models like Cindy, Naomi and Helena stalked the catwalks or a music video. But Duran Duran has delved into a little super model nostalgia with their latest video “Girl Panic,” from their new album All You Need is Now.

Duran Duran Duran Duran

Duran Duran’s latest 10-minute video “Girl Panic” plays like an epic mini-movie as directed by Grammy-winning Jonas Akerlund of "Ray of Light "(Madonna), "Paparazzi" (Lady Gaga) and "Moves Like Jagger" (Maroon 5) fame. It is a delightfully decadent throwback to the ’90s when debauched rock stars and models regularly dated, trashed luxe hotel rooms and downed bottles of Cristal in stretch limos. In this send-up video the supes Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford, Ava Herzigova, Helena Christensen and Yasmin Le Bon gleefully ape the Duran Duran boys, but dressed in femme fashions courtesy of Dolce & Gabbana, Balmain and Louis Vuitton. They also invite a bevy of their model friends into the appointed suites of the Savoy Hotel, London, for champagne swilling, table hopping and general model behavior (i.e. mayhem). At one point a rather soused Helena is chauffeured by luggage cart along with her Louis Vuittons.  But don’t worry, no super models were injured in the making of this movie. Look for cameos from the Dolce & Gabbana designers and the rockers themselves playing bellhop, chauffer, loved-up elevator man and members of the press.

Clearly the Duran Duran chaps aren’t taking themselves to seriously and the result is a fun self-parody of their raucous Rio and Girls on Film days. As John Taylor states, in the making-of-the-video clip, “It’s all daft in a way, but fantastic daft stuff.” We couldn’t have said it better. Too bad the song itself isn’t a little more Hungry Like a Wolf, rather than a rather tepid rock anthem, but all is forgiven seeing that the lads are having such a lark and can make such fun of themselves. And the rockers don’t look so bad themselves: Simon is still full of swagger, Nick still the dandy and John as devilishly handsome as the old days when he was the heartthrob on the cover of Teen Beat practically every other month. On hand to document it all, from the designer duds to the Swarovski crystal-encrusted microphones and guitar straps, Harper’s Bazaar U.K., which placed the Duran Duran model-avatars on its December cover.
