David Bowie, Mick Jagger, Lou Reed, Led Zeppelin & More Hang (Literally) at the W Atlanta-Downtown Through April 11
By Nancy Staab
The W Atlanta Downtown rocks photos by legendary lensman Martin Frias, and Atlanta is the first stop in this traveling exhibit of iconic music images. The exhibit was created in conjunction with Frias’ art director Zoya Conover and Denise Jackson of Emerging Art Scene gallery, and will open with an invitation-only party, followed by an open-to the-public exhibit March 8-April 11.
International photographer Martin Frias, who specializes in moody portraits of rock music’s demi-monde, has traveled the globe like, well, a rock star, immortalizing his wild-haired, wild-playing, wild-living subjects. Among those captured by his lens: Freddie Mercury, Mick Jagger, Robert Plant, Marilyn Manson, Chris Robinson, Iggy Pop, David Bowie and Ozzy Osbourne—all of whom show up at the “Rock Iconic” exhibit at the W Atlanta Downtown. It’s only fitting that Atlanta’s rock star hotel, with it’s edgy and sleek modern design, should host this cutting-edge exhibit. The images will be on view March 8-April 11 and the exhibit is free and open to the public.
Better yet, enjoy a rock music-inspired cocktail from the hotel’s DrinkShop, after perusing the 17 photos that are both gritty and glam. For added interest, the show also includes several quirky images of Surrealist painter Salvador Dali, cavorting in somewhat Surreal settings with a model and plastic inflatables?! It seems Frias, who is also Spanish and moonlights as a surreal painter in his own right, befriended the famous artist.
