Coming off the heels of last year’s double-win for Best Chef Southeast by Hugh Acheson of Empire State South and Linton Hopkins of Restaurant Eugene, we had big hopes for our James Beard 2013 Atlanta Nominees. The official list of semi-finalists for this prestigious culinary awards program was announced in February, and several local toques, mixologists, and restaurants made the coveted list:  www.luxecrush.com/buzz/article/this-just-in-atlanta-toques-named-semi-finalists-for-james-beard-2013-award

Now, the list of nominees has been narrowed to a handful of national finalists, with local Miller Union chef Steven Satterfield making the cut as a nominee for the prestigious “Best Chef Southeast” award. Also earning a finalist nod, the craft cocktail-based Holeman & Finch, owned by chef Linton Hopkins, for “Outstanding Bar Program,” while Kevin Gillespie’s folksy Fire In My Belly cookbook earned a “Best Cookbook” nod in the “American Cooking” category.

The final James Beard Awards program will take place May 6 in New York City and will be hosted by Golden Globe and Emmy Award-winning actor Stanley Tucci (Julie and Julia, Big Night, The Hunger Games). This year’s awards show will take a look at the role food has played in iconic American films and is entitled “Lights! Camera! Taste! Spotlight on Food & Film.” James Beard Award-winning chefs slated to cook at the gala reception include Gran Achatz, Todd English, Michael Mina, Marcus Samuelsson, Christin Tosi and more.  Food Network star Ted Allen will host the book, broadcast and journalism awards on May 3.
