Anna Dello Russo Is Top Banana at H&M This Fall

Move over Versace, Anna’s got gilded glam for days!

To true fashionistas and style-on-the-street blog followers, Italian editor Anna dell Russo needs no introduction. The flamboyantly dressed style editor, blogger and Vogue Japan staffer has never met a fascinator, vertiginous spiked heel or fuzzy Big Bird wrap that she doesn’t love, darling. Think: a bedazzled Donatella Versace crossed with fashion-forward Daphne Guinness.  

But beyond all the theatrics, lies a deep and abiding love for fashion, daring or otherwise, and supreme good taste. Dello Russo has a particular penchant for jewelry and accessories, so it was a natural fit when Swedish mass-tige brand H&M asked her to design a custom accessories line, to debut Oct. 4. Naturally, dell Russo turned to her own personal treasure trove for inspiration: period Bulgari bangles and Chanel baubles. The 43-piece collection is an exercise in over-the-top glamour that takes one back to the heady 1980s.

Gold Baroque sunglasses? Check. Serpentine bracelets? Check. Metallic gold booties with dangling charms? Check. And a fascinator topped with a stuffed bird? Check and Check!

Many of the pieces summon a Cleopatra-ear Liz Taylor in their gold and turquoise fabulosity. Dello Russo also looked to hearth and home for inspiration. A set of turquoise luggage with gilt filigree was modeled after one of her sideboards and a similar clutch is topped with a clasp in the shape of her beloved dog Cucciolina. Prices are infinitely affordable with pendant earrings priced at $24.95 and the thigh-high black leather boots hitting the upper register at $299.

Dello Russo told WWD on Sept. 10, 2012:

“I wanted to re-create the excitement of the fashion week tour, when you enter a dreamy fashion bubble, almost a parallel reality. I tried to capture that sense of freedom, joy and excitement.”

An ad campaign for the line, shot by Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott, underscores the fantasy element of Anna’s collection. Well, we may not all live in that rarefied fashion bubble that Anna speaks of, but we can certainly afford to dress like we do, with dello Russo’s extravagant accessories line for H&M. But hurry quickly to your local H&M on Oct. 4 -- we predict this line will sell out faster than a hot Krispy Kreme to a starving model!
