Dior Does Versailles
Dior-Meets-Dauphin Style and Depeche Mode!
By Nancy Staab
What happens when models dressed up in Dior go roaming through the mirrored hallways and manicured gardens of The Palace of Versailles?
We are enchanted by this new, three-minute Christian Dior film “Secret Garden,” that features Dior-draped models wandering through the opulent, French formalism of Versailles to the tune of 80’s synth band Depeche Mode’s “Enjoy the Silence.” Yes, please! The dreamy film was shot by fashion stalwarts Inez and Vinoodh and showcases Dior’s pre-Fall 2012 Collection—the last of the lady-like looks designed by John Galliano’s second-in-command Bill Gaytten. (More images of Dior’s lovely pre fall collection in slideshow feature below.) Despite our own personal raves for Gaytten, it was recently announce that Jil Sander’s head designer Raf Simons would take over the top design post at house of Dior following Galliano’s dismissal. Heads scratched with news of Simon’s new position, given that his recent trade in minimalism seems antithetical to Dior’s tradition of highly theatrical (and historical), couture extravagance. But sometimes opposites lead to the most interesting results in the fashion crucible. In the meantime, enjoy the beauty of Christian Dior’s day at Palais Versailles, including the initials C.D. imposed on the palace’s shaped gardens. So chic.
