If the Met. Ball is fashion’s version of the Oscars, and the Cannes Film Festival red carpet is the Golden Globes, than CFDA’s grand gala has to at least qualify as the SAG Awards in terms of its sartorial splendor. More an industry insider event than the Met Ball or Cannes, it still includes plenty of fashion heavy-hitters with celebs and models-of-the-moment as their dates, tons of fashion up-and-comers and a few wild cards. This year’s wild card, Johnny Depp, took home The Fashion Icon Award. Past honorees have included C.Z. Guest, Iman and Kate Moss. The high-cheekbone thespian who was recently made an honorary member of the Commanche Nation in anticipation of his upcoming role as Tonto in The Lone Ranger, has certainly embodied interesting fashion choices both in his own life and his films—from the grunge years with Kate Moss to the Keith Richards-meets-Captain Jack look for Pirates of the Carribbean, Goth-cute in Edward Scissorhands, 70’s cool in Blow, not to mention his eclectic personal style from biker jackets and fedoras to work boots. Alas,  Depp (who was rocking it out at MTV Movie Awards last night) was not able to make an appearance at this year's CFDA. Instead cult filmmaker John Waters accepted the award on Depp's behalf.

The Council of Fashion Designers of America, headed up by current president Diane von Furstenberg has served as a fashion incubator for countless rising stars-- offering mentorships, editorial in magazines like Vogue, and capsule collections for vendors such as J. Crew. This year’s full award ceremony, took place in NYC on June 4. See the entire event streamed June 5, on style.com. Below is the list of this year’s nominees and winners.
