Gilt City Dips Atlanta in Golden Opportunities!
THIS JUST IN: Flash sales fashion giant Gilt Groupe brings their curated city service to A-town with Gilt City Atlanta this Aug.
By Nancy Staab
We loved them when they launched the fast fash, members-only couture club Gilt Groupe in 2007 and so did our wallets and closets. We cheered when they expanded their enterprise to include men (Gilt Men), children, home, travel (with Jetsetter) and, most recently, food with Gilt Taste, helmed by fantabulous former Gourmet editor Ruth Reichl. Now Atlanta is getting its own dose of the Gilt lifestyle with Gilt City’s exclusive, hand-picked packages highlighting the best services, restaurants, spas, culture and experiences in our borough.
We have our own crush on luxe so this service is right up our alley. Note this is not a Groupon wannabe, but a lifestyle or concierge service, offering highly-curated, custom experiences in the city at exceptional prices via bi-weekly email offers. Local Atlanta curator Kate Whitney, who prior to this post organized national sponsorship events at Moxie Interactive for clients such as Verizon, will mastermind the Atlanta packages.
The soft launch offers made this week to existing Gilt Groupe members included indulgent spa services at the femme, pink-swathed Sugarcoat salon, special dining offers at quirky crowd favorite Local Three, and an exclusive movie premiere—all of which sold out immediately. And we hear that GiltCity is even considering some original pop-up events in our city.
The parent company Gilt Groupe was founded in 2007 by two gorgeous blonde BFF’s with shared Harvard undergrad and Harvard Business School degrees. Co-founder Alexis Maybank cut her teeth on the West Coast at eBay, helping to oversee its launch before overseeing ecommerce business development at AOL. Meanwhile, co-founder Alexandra Wilkis Wilson immersed herself in fashion’s rarefied world, managing retail operations at Bulgari and leather good sales for Louis Vuitton North America. Needless to say, these two visionaries, whose shared love of sample sales sparked their new business, have a fondness for fashion. At Gilt Groupe they can indulge their own penchant for Zac Posen, Philip Lim, Roadarte, Alexander Wang, Marchesa and countless other covetable labels at discounts up to 70%-- truly gilt-free shopping.
Weekly, 36-hour flash sales, launched by email invite, spark Gilt Groupe’s now 3.5 million members to engage in high-thrills style-stalking on the internet, where the prey is leopard-print Louboutins rather than the real things, and bagging the trophy goods is beyond brag-worthy, not to mention bargain-friendly. We also love special themed sales such as the “Gilt Goes Gaga” collection curated by Thierry Mugler designer and Lady Gaga fashion director Nicolas Formichetti or the pop-culture collection inspired by Gossip Girl. Since their formation, the GG girls have picked up Susan Lyne, the former CEO of Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia, as their chairman, and Nate Richardson, a finance guru who built and launched Yahoo! Finance among other things, as President of Gilt City.
Gilt Groupe was named one of the most innovative companies in 2010 by Fast Company, and has expanded its lifestyle empire to nearly every facet imaginable. Gilt City staked its claims to several high-profile cities like NYC, Dallas, Miami, L.A., San Francisco, etc., and we have no doubt they will now dip our own city in gilded pleasures.
