Joseph Altuzarra To Headline Fashion Cares 2012!
ATL’s stylish swan dive to summer snags a major designer

NYC designer Joseph Altuzarra, burst on the scene in 2009 and has quickly made waves in the style community, scoring the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Award in 2011 and the Swarovski Award for Womenswear in 2012. The Fashion Fund Award also included the opportunity for Altuzarra to design a capsule collection for J. Crew: a series of garments featuring French nautical stripes and sweet gingham sundresses. But the Paris-born (his dad is French-Basque and his mother Chinese-American) designer usually works from a more sophisticated, global perspective. To wit: his recent fall 2012 collection of boho-luxe nomads. As per usual, Altuzarra’s fall collection simultaneously embodied tailored sharpness and a seemingly contradictory sense of gypset embellishment. These pieces could easily be imagined on a modern-day Talitha Getty and reference everything from naval pea coats to Moroccan Berger rugs and souk-inspired pieces embellished with Mongolian lamb, gold coins, or exotic elements inspired by India. And in his 2011 fall collection the gifted Altuzarra riffed on 90’s grunge, managing to make even that anti-fashion fashion sexy, including sultry uses of, yes, Argyle!
Altuazrra’s fashion cred is pretty impressive as well. He interned for Marc Jacobs and free-lanced for Proenza Schouler before working in Paris under high-fashion label Givenchy. And A-list starlets like Kate Bosworth, Michelle Williams and Salma Hayek regularly don his artistic garments. He even dressed torch singer “It Girl” of the moment, Lana del Ray for this year’s Met. Ball. The look he crafted for her was part silver-screen glamour with a retro, slinky silver gown and part Goth glam with an edgy black cape. “Edge plus luxe” pretty much sums up this fashion original.
This year’s Fashion Cares is a repeat (or should we say three-peat) in many ways with last year’s co-chairs Louise Sams, Jeffrey McQuithy and Lila Hertz returning to host this year’s gala in a brand new venue, the American Cancer Society Center, designed by famed Atlanta architect John Portman.
The creative chairs also have a few surprises up their impeccable sleeves---promising exciting new initiatives for this year’s 20th anniversary gala. The highlight of the evening will be the always-sensational fashion show, featuring Altuzarra,Lanvin, Celine, Balenciaga, Bottega Veneta, Jason Wu, Christian Louboutin, Prada and many more high fashion labels from Jeffrey boutique. Proceeds from the couture cocktail reception and fashion show benefit Susan G. Komen for the Cure and the Atlanta AIDS Fund. Fashion Cares was founded by Jeffrey Kalinsky of Jeffrey boutique Atlanta and New York City, and is one of the largest AIDS and breast cancer benefits in the country. Past Jeffrey Care honorees have include Oscar de la Renta, Jason Wu, Isaac Mizrahi, and the designers behind Proenza Schouler.
