Meet the ruler of the NEW shoe guard
By Nancy Staab
London It-Girl Charlotte Dellal Brings her Charlotte Olympia shoe confections to Neiman Marcus, Lenox Square, Wed. April 17.
Her look may be retro, Charlotte Dellal favors Rita Hayworth waves (after her "favorite movie star"), signature red lipstick, and 40’s-era tea dresses, and her Charlotte Olympia shoe designs may have a similar throwback glamour, but her creations are also decidedly modern. And they are the latest it-thing in the fashion world. The 30-something Dellal comes by her style instincts quite naturally as the daughter of a famous English model and a Brazilian gallery owner. Her sister is famous British model Alice Dellal. But Charlotte’s fashion instincts were also honed via internships with designers Ungaro and Giambattista Valli. The look, however, is pure Charlotte. Think: femme fatale Lauren Bacall or Ava Gardner mixed with a little screwball Lucille Ball.
Charlotte’s line offers vampy high heels for days that are equal parts glamour and whimsy. For every come-hither satin, leopard print, or maribou pom-pom-trimmed boudoir heel in her collection, Dellal also creates more whimsical shoes like a kitten-faced slipper, or a Mondrian-inspired, Parisian pink poodle, or piano-keyboard heel. The fruit and flower-adorned wedges would have been favored by Carmen Miranda.
Needless to say, since she launched her shoe line Charlotte Olympia in 2007, all the fashion glossies, from Harper’s Bazaar to W magazine, have hailed Dellal as part of the new shoe guard. Hollywood’s A-list starlets like Keira Knightley, Sarah Jessica Parker and Blake Lively have also been photographed stepping out in her girly shoes. Her latest shoe foray: the Cosmic Collection with shoes and matching bags embellished with each astrological sign. For the record Dellal says "I'm a Geminimi, but my feet wear Virgo!" And for fall: get ready for her "Once Upon a Time..." Collection of fairytale-inspired shoes... and perhaps even a Cinderalla slipper? "There will be sleeping beauties, Rapunzels, enchanted forests and I have my own big, bad wolves," says Dellal.
Dellal also designs a separate bridal line, in addition to her main shoe line, that is anything but traditional. One pair includes a daring leopard print combined with the “something blue.” (Dellal wore leopard print shoes for her own wedding.] She also has a growing accessories line, including her signature transparent clutches with a spider clasp --a reference to her name Charlotte and the spider in Charlotte’s web. And each Charlotte Olympia creation comes with her trademark cobweb on the sole—its wearers caught in her expanding fashion web.
Meet Charlotte Dellal in person and see her latest collection of shoe designs at Neiman Marcus at Lenox Square on Wed. April 17 from 1:30 -3PM in the shoe salon.
